Human Rights: The Right to have Food

Learning Activity: 1x40 minute lesson or 2x20 minute lessons

a) Student work sheets :
"Help the animals go through the maze so they can graze."
Gr. 1, 2 & 3: students can work independently or with a partner.

Materials:
    student work sheets: # 4, 5, 6 & 7
    pencil
    crayons
  1. Students work independently or with a partner to help the animals go through the mazes.
  2. Colour the pictures on the mazes.
  3. Class discussion about what the animals need and how the children of the 4 countries help their animals.
    *** suggestion: play World Music while doing the mazes.
b) Planting grass seed on sponges:

Materials:
    small sponges (can usually be found at a Dollar Store)
    grass seed (can usually be found in garden centres)
  1. Divide the class into 4 groups.
  2. Wet the sponges.
  3. Sprinkle on some grass seed.
  4. Put in the sun (e.g. on a windowsill).
  5. Keep moist.
  6. Seed should sprout in about a week.
Possible extension activities:
a) Prepare an experience chart and vocabulary building from the activity (eg: rhyming words maze and graze; blends grass, grazing, grains).
b) Plant other seeds such as beans. Put some in a sunny location, some in a dark part of the room. Give some too much water, keep some damp, and let some dry out.
c) Graph the results and discuss the optimum conditions for plants to grow.

Learning Stations, as available, for background information:
plants, farm animal models, library books, pictures of animals from Kenya, Pakistan, El Salvador and Canada, internet sites, musical tapes/CDs of World Music.
